Infrastructure

Room for research and new ideas

Researchers of FAU NMP, within the former Cluster of Excellence EAM, have been able to raise substantial funds from the federal government and the state for building projects to improve the research infrastructure on FAU’s south campus in a sustainable manner. The six construction projects launched by the Cluster of Excellence EAM since 2009 have a total volume of more than 100 million euros and generate more than 11,000 square meters floor space (office and laboratory space) for research. The new buildings, equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and instrumentation, enable the interdisciplinary research groups to compete at world level or even to take a pioneering role.

Helmholtz-Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (HI ERN)

The Helmholtz-Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy is set up as a branch office of Forschungszentrum Jülich and is operated in close cooperation with Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB). The Cluster of Excellence EAM served as driving force for the new institute. With its Cluster of Excellence, the FAU has achieved ground-breaking successes in research, which is now applied in research and development of renewable energy systems. The institute’s new building was completed by 2020, accommodating around 115 scientists from HI ERN. The new building is erected in the immediate vicinity of the IZNF which promises a wide range of research perspectives.

Interdisciplinary Center for Nanostructured Films (IZNF)

In the Interdisciplinary Center for Nanostructured Films (IZNF) the natural and engineering fundamentals of the fabrication of nanostructured functional thin films and their integration into functional thin-film systems are studied. The research building with a total floor space of 4,638 square meters and a construction period of less than 3 years, is located on FAU´s south campus in Erlangen in close proximity to participating disciplines and other renowned partner institutions.
The funds for the research project were raised in accordance with Article 91b (1) Basic Law and approved by the Budget Committee of the Bavarian State Parliament in July 2015.

Interdisciplinary Center for Functional Particle Systems (FPS)

Aim of the Interdisciplinary Center for Functional Particle Systems is to generate, formulate and apply particles (building blocks) with tailored size, shape and structure. Therefore, researcher from three faculties and five areas – chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics and medicine – work interdisciplinary together at FPS. Funding for the research project was raised in accordance with Article 91b (1) Basic Law.

New chemistry building and reconstruction of the technical chemistry hall

In 2010 the Free State of Bavaria has invested funds in the reconstruction of the technical chemistry hall as well as in a new chemistry building in which cluster research in the areas of nanoelectronic and catalytic materials has found its home. The new chemical building is connected with the old chemical buildings and allows the direct use of already established infrastructure. In the new chemistry building the activities for the production and characterization of electronic components are concentrated with the synthesis of the starting materials in neighboring laboratories. Further, synergies and analogies already identified for the production, characterization and application of novel catalytic systems can be fully exploited by accommodating researchers in the same building.

New building for particle synthesis

In the laboratory building of the EAM professorship for particle synthesis, the focus is on the synthesis, functionalization and organization of particles into ordered superstructures. The overriding goal is the production of defined, nanostructured materials from colloidal building blocks. The new building comprises two synthetic laboratories for the chemical synthesis of polymeric and inorganic nanoparticles as well as various instruments for the structuring and modification of surfaces. This enables the observation of the organization of colloidal particles in ordered superstructures and their characterization.

New building for transmission electron microscopy

In 2009, the first EAM building was completed with a planning and construction period of only eleven months. The building accommodates a high-end transmission electron microscope (TEM) and has been specially designed for the microscope, fully air – conditioned and vibration – free. In October 2014 a new TEM “FEI Titan Themis³ 300” was installed providing high-resolution imaging as well as high performance analytical investigation capabilities.
