Room for research and new ideas
Researchers of FAU NMP, within the former Cluster of Excellence EAM, have been able to raise substantial funds from the federal government and the state for building projects to improve the research infrastructure on FAU’s south campus in a sustainable manner. The six construction projects launched by the Cluster of Excellence EAM since 2009 have a total volume of more than 100 million euros and generate more than 11,000 square meters floor space (office and laboratory space) for research. The new buildings, equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and instrumentation, enable the interdisciplinary research groups to compete at world level or even to take a pioneering role.

New building for particle synthesis
In the laboratory building of the EAM professorship for particle synthesis, the focus is on the synthesis, functionalization and organization of particles into ordered superstructures. The overriding goal is the production of defined, nanostructured materials from colloidal building blocks. The new building comprises two synthetic laboratories for the chemical synthesis of polymeric and inorganic nanoparticles as well as various instruments for the structuring and modification of surfaces. This enables the observation of the organization of colloidal particles in ordered superstructures and their characterization.
Location: Haberstraße 7
Floor Space: 188 m²
Storeys: 1 (without basement)
Completion: December 2010
Inauguration: July 2011
New building for transmission electron microscopy
In 2009, the first EAM building was completed with a planning and construction period of only eleven months. The building accommodates a high-end transmission electron microscope (TEM) and has been specially designed for the microscope, fully air – conditioned and vibration – free. In October 2014 a new TEM “FEI Titan Themis³ 300” was installed providing high-resolution imaging as well as high performance analytical investigation capabilities.
